1 – Poor drainage system in the lawn

2 – Grass varieties not favorable to the climate and the area.

3 – Compaction of soil

4 – Drought

5 – Too much shady place

6 – Poor fertility of the ground

7 – Thatch accumulation

8 – Mowing practices that are poor

9 – Diseases

The most typical reasons responsible for lawn failure are due to moss and with that the additional trouble that weeds possess.

WHAT CAN BE USED AND IMPLEMENTED TO FIGHT LAWN MOSS

Following are the materials that can be used to eliminate the problem of moss-

1 – A small shovel

2 – Trimmers

3 – Lawn lime

4 – Grass seeds

5 – A metal rake

6 – Moss cutting products

HOW TO KILL LAWN MOSS?

The pleasant news to your ears should be this that yes! Moss can be eliminated. Ferrous ammonium sulfate and ferrous sulfate used in weed killer are surely effective. Brands like moss-kil, rid-moss and a variety of products for controlling moss are available now in the market.

Luckily, it has been proven that these products unlike other fertilizers do not harm the environment in any way. In fact, iron and sulphur are nutrients that are necessary for grass to be healthy and even improve its color.

It is a fact that with the help of these moss pesticides which are available commercially, the problem of existing lawn moss is eliminated but the owner should keep this also on mind that what were the conditions that gave the moss a chance to grow in the lawn.  If proper care is not taken it won’t be long when again there will be the knock of unwelcomed guests on your lawn again.

WHY THE GRASS FAILS?

The failure of grass in the lawn is relate to a number of different reasons. It can be due to poor drainage system, low temperatures, or due to the diseases in the vicinity. Overly compacted soil and a bad drainage system may lead to the suffocation of root or cause the disease. Over-compaction of thatch and soil interfere with the normal movement of water to the grass-roots, creating a condition of Drought Stress.

KEEPING A CHECK ON LAWN MOSS

The lawn moss can be controlled and discouraged by improving the soil pH with the help of dolomitic or the agricultural lime. This increases the availability of the nutrients and provides calcium to existing grass. It however does not directly eliminate the moss. In order to make the control effective the owner has to directly keep a check on lawn moss, and at the same time prevent any more occurrence of it in future. It can be implemented in the following ways-

1 – Such moss-control products should be employed so that in late winter or early spring the lawn moss can be eliminated.

2 – With the help of a good metal rake the dead mosses should either be raked out or de-thatched as mosses have a very thin root system. Due to this their removal is simple in comparison to other weeds.

3 – With the help of a smaller spade, other weeds present in the lawn should be pulled out. Weeds growing in lawn house have a vast root system because of which we have to dug them up and pull them out for a total weed removal.

4 – The weeds and lawn moss that are removed should be disposed off in an isolated area at a reasonable distance. The removed lawn moss and weeds should never be put on compost pile which later can sometime be utilized on the yard. This is because the roots of weeds and spores of moss have a persistent nature; they spread throughout the lawn very conveniently in case any carelessness is showed.

5 – The bare areas or the areas which previously were having lawn moss or weed should be reseeded with rye grass or with the help of fescue and the mixture of rye grass. The more the grass in the lawn would be, the lesser the space lawn moss and weeds will have to grow.

6-      Coat the newly planted seeds of grass with loose soil in a quarter inch which is free from weeds.

7-      The dressing at the top should be kept moist until the seedlings get well established.

The following practices can also be used to improve the situation of the lawn-

1 – Either utilize a wetting agent, or aerate well or put extra water for getting compact soil.

2 – If the lime was not utilized in a proper way in the past years, then on every thousand square feet a little amount should be put down especially in and around areas that had moss and problems of weeds. Lawn lime’s usefulness is this that  it boosts the pH factor of the soil, which in turn provides nutrients to the soil that are enriched with minerals that are needed by grass to grow well and effectively.

3 – In order to have more sunlight in the lawn, thin the tree limbs and trim plants and bushes surrounding the lawn. This will reduce the competition on the lawn. Plenty of sunlight is needed by grass to properly photosynthesize.

4 – Conditions should be created in the modifying site that are favorable for the lawn grasses and discourage the growth of lawn moss. Trimming trees and shrubs can improve the circulation of air and penetration of light so that too much shade is not there that encourages the growth of lawn moss.
